Many people with visual impairments would like to lead as normal a life as possible and have access to spaces, environments and activities that those without impairments take for granted. Swimming pools are one such example and prove a particularly challenging environment for those with visual impairments.
There are many examples of blind people who have developed impressive hearing skills that help them navigate in their environment (Thaler et al.,2011). This project is inspired by these skills and uses a system of sounds to assist those with visual impairments to navigate a swimming pool and to improve their swimming experience. The objects uses an easily understood, specific language code that allows users to know where they are located in the swimming pool and their direction of travel.
